Power Factor Correction Systems

In a facility with a low power factor, the distribution company charges a reactive energy fee.

Stepped Switching Method

Sizing the capacitor bank

Compensation power is calculated from the gap between the current power factor and the target value. Stepped capacitor banks switch in and out automatically as the load changes, which keeps overcompensation from happening.

If harmonic-generating loads such as frequency converters or welding machines are present, a standard capacitor bank carries a resonance risk; a series-reactor or active-filter solution is preferred in that case.

A bulged capacitor cell is the visual sign that internal pressure has strained the safety seal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the reactive fee disappear completely once a compensation panel is installed?
With a correctly sized system, the reactive energy fee largely disappears, and periodic checks keep it that way.
Is harmonic-filtered compensation necessary in every facility?
No, it's recommended only for facilities with a high concentration of harmonic-generating loads, such as frequency converters or welding machines.
How long do capacitors last?
It depends on operating conditions; regular maintenance and correct sizing are the biggest factors in extending their life.
